We met up with Indy Power of The Little Green Spoon this week to talk about her journey as a food blogger and how following her passion has led to the success of her blog. Indy always loved cooking and used to be very popular at home for making the most delicious cup cakes. Indy’s parents were always quite health conscious so she set out trying to make healthier versions of some of her favourite recipes. It soon became obvious there was a huge demand for nutritious recipes. Indy recently graduated with a business degree but, like us, her real passion is food, real honest to goodness, healthy food. Indy believes that the easier it is to eat well, the more likely you are to look after yourself- and the people around you. Eating real, natural food has so many amazing benefits and Indy has seen incredible changes in her own digestive health, skin and mood since she started her healthy lifestyle journey, all while continuing to enjoy incredibly delicious food. Indy’s cooking isn’t about sacrificing, least of all taste. It’s about embracing natural, nutritious and nourishing foods.
So, you were in College when you first set up The Little Green Spoon. What inspired you to take the first steps and did you ever see your blog becoming as successful as it has?
It was my family, mostly my mom, who first encouraged me to start a blog. I had been experimenting a lot with what I ate and spending so much time in the kitchen coming up with recipes. I kept it secret for a little while as it can be daunting putting yourself out there and I wanted to build up a little bit of content before spreading the word. I first started it just as a hobby, as a way to share my (successful!) recipe experiments with others. I definitely didn’t think anything would come of it! I started getting really into it posting more regularly, practicing my photography etc and the more I did it, the more I loved it.
How important has it been for you as a young person setting this up on your own to have the support of friends and family and what has this meant to you and your brand?
It’s so important to have supportive people around you. When I was starting out, it was those close to me who I was more concerned about reading my blog than people I didn’t know. My family and friends have been amazing. It’s invaluable to have people encouraging you, it’s what makes you keep going and striving to do better. Being able to share the little successes with those people is what makes it worth it! Knowing that there’s people who believe in you makes the world of difference and gives you the confidence to really go for it.
A lot of people might find it difficult to understand how you motivate yourself to work within your own schedule and motivate yourself to get certain tasks done each day.
I find I work much better if I set my own routine rather than having a strict schedule. I’ve never really had a problem with motivating myself, I think if you’re passionate about what you do then the motivation comes naturally. I definitely work as many hours as a regular job but I love being able to be flexible, some days I’ll be out of the house crazy early to get everything done and some days I’ll work in my pyjamas all day. As long as you’re able to prioritize, working within your own schedule is such a blessing.
Do you feel your passion for food and health helps you relate to your followers?
Yes, definitely. Living a healthy lifestyle is such a personal journey. There’s no one formula that’s best for everyone, getting feedback from my readers and understanding what they might want to see is what inspires each of my posts. I love sharing my passion for food and it’s amazing to think that I might help someone to live a healthier life.
Do you believe the success of The Little Green Spoon is driven by your passion for food and a healthy lifestyle?
Passion is definitely the most important part of what I do – I want to make people fall in love with healthy food, without that there is no blog! If there’s no passion I don’t think you can create quality content. When you’re passionate about something, what you create is going to be more honest and real and you’ll want to put in the time to make it the best it can be. Genuine love for food and living a healthy lifestyle is what inspired me to start my blog and what drives me to keep doing it.
Could you share some tips you would give to people currently in jobs or studying and thinking about following their passion as a career.
I think the job that you’ll be best at is the one you love. I’m a big believer in “do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life.” If there’s something your passionate about, just dive straight in and give it your all. It could be the best decision you ever make and you’ll never regret trying.
